Avoca Street South Yarra

Within walking distance of the Botanic Gardens, Avoca Street is one of South Yarra’s best locations. Despite a number of apartment blocks springing to life during the 1960’s and 70’s architecturally Avoca Street remains graceful with a mix of luxury mansions, Victorian terraces and contemporary homes alongside the apartment blocks.

Originally named Avoca Road, Avoca Street took its name from the large estate called “Avoca” which occupied land from Domain Road to the Yarra River. The southern part of the estate between Domain Road and Toorak Road was subdivided by William Montgomery Bell into 75 quarter acre blocks in 1854 forming Avoca Road.

At number 6 Avoca Street is Waterloo c. 1890, an iconic South Yarra home which is part of the famous Lee Terrace, a row of seven spectacularly intact Italianate terrace houses named after the designed David Lee.  Number six features a unique external staircase with decorative cast iron balustrading running on the outside of the three-storey building. A bed and breakfast of the 1930s before being purchased in 1955 by the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria it was used as its headquarters for more than 45 years.

“Richmond House” at number 56 Avoca Street was originally known as “Pately” and then “Lindisfarne” was built in 1858-1859. A South Yarra townhouse of the era, “Richmond House” is deprived of the early colonial architectural style making it rather unusual.
